What an interesting chapter. I get a kick out of Pauls “human point of view”. We shouldn’t be punished because our sinfulness shows others God righteousness. We can justify anything, can’t we? I remember hearing a speaker say one time (jokingly) that “we all have a purpose to serve in some way on this earth. Even the worst Christian can serve as a bad example”. What an unfortunate truth this turns out to be sometimes.
What really stood out to me today was vs.20 “for no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.” NLT
We simply cannot achieve righteousness on our own. How often do we try and earn it ourselves? Only to fail at some point along the way, and feel frustrated and guilty and want to give up. We needed Jesus to step in for us, to be the sacrifice. The law was there to point out where we fall short, but we could never fully fix it. None of us, “for we all fall short of God’s glorious standard” NLT
It’s only by putting our faith in Jesus are we saved, not by earning it, not by trying to obey every small detail of the law, not by being a good person. Only Jesus. Wow, what a great passage of scripture to read this morning!
Lord, we thank you for your incredible sacrifice for us all. God we thank you that we don’t need to earn it, we don’t need to work for it, but rather, you did all the work required on the cross. Thank you for this gift. However, Lord, may our desire be to live Holy lives, striving to obey your laws, not to earn our righteousness, but because of Yours. Help me to do your will, and forgive me where I fall short today. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen.
