Advent Day 9-Names of Jesus “Prophet”

Luke 24:19

19 “What things?” he asked.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.

PROPHET:  person regarded as an inspired teacher or proclaimer of the will of God.

We can see by that definition why Jesus was called a prophet. The big difference of course is He was not just a teacher or proclaimer of the will of God, He was also God.

Long before Jesus, there was a prediction given by Moses that there would one day come another prophet that would be like himself. The people of Israel were all familiar with this prediction that was given by Moses and they were full of expectation that one day this predicted prophet that would be like Moses was for the people of Israel. In the same way, Moses helped to bring deliverance for the people of Israel out of the bondage of Egypt, Jesus came to bring deliverance for the people from the bondage of sin.

Deuteronomy 18:15-19

The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.”

17 The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name.

Lord we thank you again for another beautiful day. Through You we have been given God’s will, help us to all understand it and may our appetite to feed on your word never diminish. Again we ask for your help to be a light today to someone who needs encouragement. In Jesus name, amen.
